NEW HANOVER COUNTY—It’s “Plant an Azalea Week” in New Hanover County.

With the upcoming Azalea Festival, New Hanover County Parks and Gardens is preparing to add even more of the hometown glory to area green spaces.  County officials, Azalea Belles and dozens of volunteers will be on the scene as the park adds new blossoms.

To continue the week of Azalea celebrations, residents may purchase a card in exchange for the promise of a new Azalea to be planted in a New Hanover County park.

The $15 cards featuring art by Barbara Bear Jamison can be purchased at the New Hanover County Parks office or at Airlie Gardens.

Janine Powell, a spokesperson for New Hanover County Parks and Gardens, said the cards will be available through next week.

“It’s a great way to honor or pay tribute to someone,” Powell said.

Powell said New Hanover County Parks and Gardens is encouraging the public to plant Azaleas, either through purchasing a card or picking up a plant at a local home goods store.

She wants to ensure New Hanover County remains known for its Azaleas.

“So far we’ve planted more than 150 Azaleas in New Hanover County Parks,” Powell said.
